Red Wattle Pork

We raise and sell red wattle hogs. The red wattle is a rare heritage breed hog that is listed as threatened by the Livestock Conservancy. The red wattle is a large breed that is easy to handle and well suited to outdoors production. They are called "wattle" because they have fleshy appendages that hang on either side of their chin. The wattles have no known use.

The red wattle are good foragers, excellent mothers who raise large litters, and best of all, they taste great! They have repeatedly been winners in tastes tests when put up against other breeds. So why eat them if they are so rare you ask? Well, if nobody ate them, there would be no reason to raise them. We can't afford to raise them as pets.

Our hogs are raised outdoors on pasture.During the warm months, they get all the forage they can eat. In the winter, we feed them hay along with their grain. We are not registered organic, but we do not use pesticides or herbicides on our land. We feed a grain mix that we have blended at the local feed mill in town. It is grown by local area farmers. We do not use antibiotics except when necessary to save a pigs life. Why give antibiotics when they aren't even sick? Hormones or artificial growth promoters are never used. We feel that this is a sensible approach that helps keep our pork affordable and healthy.
